What is
"Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry?"

  • This is the field which exists at the intersection of Medicine and Psychiatry. Present since the 1930's, it is one of the most rapidly growing sub-specialty areas of Psychiatry.

  • This area of Psychiatry refers to the complicated and nuanced ways in which the mind and body interact, and provides a more elegant way of understanding "illness" than a simplistic mind-body split.

  • This field includes both consultation and liaison relationships, such that the Consultation-Liaison Psychiatrist works closely with other physicians and providers in cardiology, oncology (cancer), hematology, surgery, general medicine, & other medical specialties.

  • One of the most rapidly growing areas of this sub-specialty field is in outpatient clinical practice, with the Consultation-Liaison psychiatric physician closely collaborating with primary care and specialist physicians in the community, in order to optimize the care and attention you receive as a patient within the community. This can also include collaborating closely with your other mental health providers, even if you are already in therapy and looking for medication management.
